Through interdisciplinary research, evidence-based training programs, and stakeholder engagement, we work to strengthen communication between scientists and the communities they serve.
Within the Science Communications Lab, we study how people engage with, understand, and respond to scientific information. Our research explores the communication challenges and opportunities that influence public understanding of issues related to agriculture, natural resources, environmental sustainability, and the life sciences.

REEU-ECN Podcast Series
The REEU-ECN Podcast Series provides students with hands-on experience translating scientific research into engaging, public-facing conversations. Through podcast production, interviewing, and storytelling, participants develop professional science communication skills while exploring topics related to environmental and natural resource sciences. The project demonstrates how research findings can be shared with broader audiences through accessible and impactful digital media.
Dialsmith Audience Response Research
The Dialsmith Audience Response Research project allows students and researchers to measure real-time audience reactions to communication messages and media content. Using moment-to-moment response technology, participants evaluate audience engagement, perceptions, and message effectiveness as content is presented. This research helps identify communication strategies that foster understanding, trust, and informed decision-making.
Studio Photography and Design
The Studio Photography and Design project provides students with hands-on experience creating professional visual content for campus and community partners. Using the Science Communications Lab’s photography studio, equipment, and editing software, students develop skills in portrait photography, lighting, image composition, and visual storytelling. These experiences prepare students to create high-quality communication materials that effectively serve clients and audiences.
STUDENT RESEARCH PROGRAMS
Faculty in the Science Communications Lab are committed to training undergraduate and graduate students to study the science of science communications in the context of the agricultural, life and environmental sciences and promoting research as a necessary skill for all students graduating with a degree in science communications. The Lab provides research opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a research-focused degree within the agricultural and life sciences.
